eBookPro Review
By Joy Healey
I've been reading Martyn's mini-course on
eBooks with interest.
Having sold hard-copy information
products, with the attendant expenses of production and
distribution, eBooks was an area I'd wanted to get into for
some time.
However, although I had dipped my toe into
the waters gently, I had already encountered some of the
problems he mentioned, which discouraged me from seeing
eBook production as something worth spending much time on. I
won't repeat Martyn's course, but, to summarise, my two main
worries were:
1) Finding someone had stolen my eBook and
was selling it under their own name on eBay at
£1
2) People returning the product and
claiming a refund, despite having kept a
copy
Then I was introduced to eBookPro, which
solved these problems and others I hadn't even thought of,
so I bought it and having tried it out for a few weeks, I
have been delighted with my purchase, finding it very easy
to produce impressive results.
The editor has a particularly useful
feature, in that you can work in one of three
modes.
a) If you have no knowledge of HTML, use a
WYSIWYG editor on one of the pre-formatted
templates
b) HTML experts can work directly with
code
c) HTML beginners, like me, can work with
a split screen that shows the design at the top 'as the user
will see it', and at the bottom, the underlying HTML
code.
I developed my books
based using the pre-defined templates to benefit from a
consistent format, chapters, page-turning, website links,
graphics, video and audio. This gives a far more
professional result than I would have been able to put
together myself.
The package comes with excellent online
video tutorials so that I had something to show for my work
within an hour. If you have questions that aren't answered
in the on-line help and tutorials there's very good email
support from real people. (Don't you just hate
auto-responder support emails where it's obvious no-one has
read your question!) When I had one particularly challenging
problem, the support people logged into my machine to give
'Remote Assistance' and actually fixed the problem before my
eyes. Emailing back and forwards could have taken for-ever,
but this got me "back on the road" in no
time.
All
ebooks are registered centrally, so after making a sale, if
someone decides they want a refund
or puts a "chargeback" on their credit card, I can simply
"deactivate" their eBook so that when the eBook checks back
with the registering server, it becomes unavailable to that
user!
eBookPro will even let you set
the number of times EACH READER can register their
eBook to prevent sharing and theft. The default
has been set to "two registrations", but you could easily
change this to let the buyer 'share' their password with
ONE other person, or even provide a "share it with a friend"
feature, an excellent way of spreading the word
about your product.
Because
eBookPro
gives this full control over every single
eBook you sell or give away, it's easy to offer "free trial"
eBooks that give readers full or partial access to your information for
a limited time. If they don't like the eBook, they
simply say "no thanks" and you shut off their eBook access
from the control panel. Trial book promotions such as this
are an excellent way to boost
sales.
Another important facility is the
ability to collect the contact
information of every person who reads your eBook, because
often an eBook is a loss-leader given away as a
list-builder. If you can't follow up with
potential sales leads, you're losing future
profits. It's commercial sense to collect the
first name, last name, and e-mail address of every person
who reads your eBook.
And of course when you capture this contact information, you
must get
permission to send these sales leads e-mails in the
future using an opt-in offer, all of which can be done easily
with eBookPro.
Another theft prevention measure
is that you can decide whether to allow your eBook to be
printed or not, even down to selecting specific lessons
or chapters. This would make it extremely difficult for
someone to steal your work by retyping
it.
Although I haven't yet tried this,
eBook Pro 6.0 integrates seamlessly with the same
publisher's Mailloop e-mail automation
software so that eBooks can be delivered to customers
on your
behalf, within minutes of their order, and
every new customer is automatically added to a
detailed customer database on your own
computer.

Hopefully this will
give you an idea of what you can achieve very quickly
formatting-wise. This doesn't actually do justice to the
facilities, but I put it together really quickly because
my main priority was to urgently replace what I had
already produced with something 'one level up' in
presentation.
